Problem Solving Math Grade 4-20
You simply use the basic formula: rate times the time equals distance, or r * t = d (where "*" is the symbol for times). In the worksheets below, students work the problems and fill their answers in the provided blank spaces.

Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. For example, given the rule "Add 3" and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers.

A.3Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself.

Pattern Block Fraction Design requires students to fill a shape with pattern blocks to create a design that meets certain requirements.

Students must also write a fraction that describes the part of the total design represented by each different color pattern block.

Spinner Game presents students with a frequency table of spins and requires students to create a bar graph of the results and draw a spinner that would yield those results.

Students must justify their proposed spinner, explaining how it fits the data.

Tell them that since they know the formula, r * t = d, they merely need to adjust to isolate "r." They can do this by dividing each side of the equation by "t," which yields the revised formula r = d ÷ t (rate or how fast the aunt is traveling = the distance she traveled divided by the time).

Then just plug in the numbers: r = 3,060 miles ÷ 5 hours = 612 mph.

Explain to students that you can find the rate (or speed) that someone is traveling if you know the distance and time that she traveled.

Conversely, if you know the speed (rate) that a person is traveling as well as the distance, you can calculate the time he traveled.
